INTRODUCTION
First Baptist Church International Student Ministry is a part of the broader ministry of First Baptist Church, Durham, NC, whose vision statement is as follows:

ISM seeks to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ by evangelizing and equipping the nations brought to Durham in order to perpetuate fulfillment of the Great Commission task (Matt. 28:19-20).

Doctrine
The doctrinal position of ISM and First Baptist Church are found in the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Academic Credit
The International Student Ministries of the First Baptist Church, Durham are an approved part of field ministry for students of Southeastern Baptist College and Theological Seminary at Wake Forest, NC.

International Student Ministry provides vital experience working within established ministries or developing new ministries according to the participant’s gifts, calling and interests. International Student Ministries can provide access to cultures, language and customs of people groups who may be served in a career capacity.


 

PRE-EVANGELISM

1.  Mattress Ministry
Delivery of free good used mattresses and frames is an excellent way of establishing primary contact.  University Ford graciously loans trucks and men of the church provide the labor along with international students.  Donations come from Duke University, local churches and the Durham community.

            Times: Collecting Donations in spring and fall, Fall deliveries

2.  New Student Welcome
Emphasing in the Fall is on establishing contacts through the new student population at Duke University.  Programs are in place to meet new students through International House, mattress deliveries, and Basic Christianity. Also, a welcome picnic is hosted on Labor Day to meet and greet new students.

            Time: Mid August- Early September

            Workers Needed: volunteers to coordinate food, games, evangelism, and follow- up

3.  International Friends Program
FBC works through the International House at Duke to house international student when they first arrive.  The commitment is minimal at an airport reception, one night’s lodging, breakfast in the A.M., and a ride to International House.  There is certainly no limit on further contact.

            Time: Late August, through September

            Workers Needed: drivers and possibly host homes

4.   ESL Classes (English as a Second Language)
ISM currently sponsors a Wednesday evening ESL class for ages 5 and up. There are multiple classes accommodating differing English levels. This is a great chance to further relationships with internationals, assist them practically, and share the gospel.  

            Time: Wednesday 6:30-7:30PM

5.  International Friends (formerly International Wives)
Ministers to wives of Duke students, scholars and researchers. Involves ESL and other activities.

            Time: Tuesday mornings 9:45-11:30AM

6.  Duke Monday Luncheon
In cooperation with Bridges International (Campus Crusade for Christ) FBC hosts a luncheon one Monday per month to meet and fellowship with international students, visiting scholars, and researches at Duke University.

            Time: Monday (TBA) 12-1PM in the Bryan Center, Multi-cultural Affairs Room

            Workers Needed: volunteers to prepare and bring food, and to make contacts

7.      Grand Asian Market Shopping Trip
In conjunction with the Duke Chinese Christian Fellowship (DCCF) FBC provides transportation one Saturday per month to students residing at or near Duke campus to the Grand Asian Market in Cary. This provides a way to meet a physical need and build relationships at the same time.

8.      Fourth of July
ISM has sponsored several differing Fourth of July events, ranging from a picnic and watching fireworks to attending a Durham Bulls baseball game! Again, this is a tremendous opportunity to make new contacts, further relationships, and share the Gospel.

9.  Thanksgiving Dinner
Held at an FBC member’s home during Thanksgiving week.  This event joins Americans and Internationals for dinner and testimonies.

            Time: Thanksgiving Week

10.   Christmas Party
This is a special time for internationals to learn the true meaning of Christmas and for ISM to collect new prospects.

11.   Trips
Several day trips are planned to points of interest in North Carolina at various times of the year.  Also planned are trips to the Smoky Mountains and Camp Living Water. These trips involve extended stays (2-4 days) along with snow skiing, white water rafting and other mountain related activities.

12.   Target Groups
Other groups are being targeted for ministry.  Some of these will require a longer time to develop into legitimate and on-going ministries. Currently targeted groups are Russian, Chinese, and Vietnamese speakers, Hindus and Muslims.  As personnel and opportunities allow other people groups will become ISM targeted.

EVANGELISM

1.  Bible For Life
A brief time to interact with students as we walk through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, discussing who Christ is and what that means for our lives.

Two classes are currently offered:

            Time:  Sundays 9:45-10:45AM

            Workers Needed: teachers and assistants

2.  Basic Christianity
Emphasis in the Fall is on establishing contacts through the new student population at Duke University. A Basic Christianity Class is conducted for the new Duke student population. The class sponsored by the International Bible For Life is held at FBC and in home groups. This class covers basic doctrine and runs for 4 weeks in mid-September – October.

3.  Home Bible Studies
This is an effective means of evangelism and discipleship. Studies ranging from Mandarin speakers, to being invited to an American home, etc. can greatly increase chances to effectively evangelize outside of the church. The ISM resources of FBC can be used to develop more such studies to targeted groups.

4.  Visitation
Visitation can be done through FBC on Wednesday evenings from 6-8PM, Saturdays from 3-5PM, or on a personal schedule.  Contacts come from Sunday School, outreach activities, absentees, and prospects from furniture deliveries.

DISCIPLESHIP

1.   Investing in Internationals
Through various other ministries, individuals are identified for specific development either by apparent spiritual interest, profession of faith, or leadership potential.  These people need mentoring on a personal basis.

2.      Preparing for Re-Entry
Those who have been ministered to need personal preparation in order to return home or move to a job in America and transfer their ISM experience to that other culture.  This will enable them to be sure of their salvation, remain faithful, witness and even plant churches.

3.   Paul-Timothy Curriculum
Currently curriculum is being developed to grow believers in a pattern of sound doctrine (Phil. 3:17) and right living (2 Tim. 1:13). This curriculum will be formatted specifically to the two aspects of the Christian journey; internal (personal holiness and sanctification) and external (missions and evangelism).
