Topics for Spring 2010
Group One - (Matthew Hodges, Sr. and Rick Lesh) Sermon Application and Review
This group will meet in Morgan Hall immediately after the morning worship service. Group members will share a potluck lunch at church, then will discuss and apply the Sunday morning sermon. Though open to anyone, it is designed for those individuals who would have a long commute to a home fellowship and would be interested in meeting together immediately after the service. This home fellowship should consistently conclude around 2:00pm.
Group Two (Andy Davis) - Humility
"God opposes the proud, but give grace to the humble" (James 4:6). If that's true, shouldn't we strive to be humble? We'll be using C.J. Mahaney's excellent book Humility: True Greatness to help us learn to cultivate biblical humility. This will be a thorough study on the biblical passages associated with humility and practical discussion on how to reflect humility in our everyday lives.
Group Three (Eddie Stephens) - Tru U
In an effort to prepare parents and young people to know what they believe and why they believe it, this Home Fellowship group will study various aspects of theology in order to prepare participants to be grounded in their faith. True U is a DVD-based apologetics curriculum designed to help young people solidify their Christian faith and equip them to stand strong in the university environment. The goal of this study is to equip participants to confidently answer scientific arguments that are frequently leveled against biblical faith. There will be DVD instruction followed by in-depth discussion and study centered around various topics.
Group Four (Tim Pyrant and Richard Ward) - Truth Project-
The Truth Project is a DVD-based small group curriculum comprised of 12 lessons taught by Dr. Del Tackett. This home study is the starting point for looking at life from a biblical perspective. Each lesson discusses in great detail the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life. This study will not only feature DVD-based curriculum, but will also enjoy thorough discussion and prayer on a weekly basis.
Group Five (Andy Winn) - The Discipline of Grace
This study will seek to offer a clear and thorough explanation of the gospel and what it means to the believer. There is no question that we need to grow in holiness, and that pursuing holiness is hard work. However, we must never forget that the way we grow in holiness is based on the daily grace God gives us. If you have ever struggled with what your role is and what role God takes in your growth as a Christian, the study will comfort and challenge you as you learn to rest in Christ while vigorously pursuing a life of holiness.
Group Six (Tom Gears) - Studying 1 Peter
Our study of I Peter will be in-depth as well as devotional. Plan on bringing your Bible to enjoy sound teaching and thoughtful discussion as we study this book. We will be richly blessed as we study the scriptures, and apply it to our lives.
Group Seven (Flynn Cratty) - The Cross Centered Life
So you know and believe the gospel. How do we make sure our hearts stay firmly moored to the gospel when they so quickly drift away from it? You're invited to join us as we consider C.J. Mahaney's insightful book, The Cross Centered Life. All are welcome.
Group Eight - Has Combined with Other groups for the Spring semester
Group Nine (Jeremy Gage) - A Study of the Minor Prophets
Have you read through the "Minor Prophets" and wondered what makes them "minor"? Have you visited that section of your Bible lately or are those pages still "brand new"? This Home Fellowship group will cover one of the 12 minor prophets each week in a broad fashion (finding themes, context, significant passages, etc.), and use any additional weeks to study the broader historical context of the OT after Solomon. We will learn how the message of "Minor Prophets" were not only needed for the time it was written, but also how it is relevant and applicable for our lives today.
Group Ten (Christian Jernigan) - Pilgrims Progress
This study aims to look at the Christian life through the lens of Bunyan's The Pilgrims Progress. As Christian journeys to the Celestial City we will examine and discuss the biblical themes presented regarding the Christian life. Join us as we journey together towards the Celestial City.
Group Eleven (Eric Campbell) - Humility
"God opposes the proud, but give grace to the humble" (James 4:6). If that's true, shouldn't we strive to be humble? We'll be using C.J. Mahaney's excellent book Humility: True Greatness to help us learn to cultivate biblical humility. This will be a thorough study on the biblical passages associated with humility and practical discussion on how to reflect humility in our everyday lives.

Group Thirteen (Blake Woodlief, D'Arcey Carroll) - Studying the book of Amos
Our study of Amos will be in-depth as well as devotional. We have come to realize that though Amos is often quoted by many people, the book is understood by very few. It is our desire to study this prophet and to enjoy mining the treasures of this book. Plan on bringing your Bible to enjoy sound teaching and thoughtful discussion as we study this book. We will be richly blessed as we study the scriptures, and apply it to our lives.
Group Fourteen (Ron Halbrooks, Patrick Gilbert) - Sermon Application and Review
The first chapter of James aptly reminds us, "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." It is so easy for us to listen to messages, read books, and go to bible studies, amassing information and yet failing to integrate the truth we have learned into our lives. In an effort to get more out of the incredibly powerful sermons we hear every Sunday morning, Sermon Application and Review will be focused on discussing the morning sermon in order to have meaningful give-and-take (conversation) over the Word and to encourage a deeper application of biblical truth into our daily lives.
Group Fifteen (Greg Fox, Eric Wills) - Selected Topics in Theology
This study will concentrate on understanding various topics of theology throughout the scripture. We will tackle some basic topics geared towards laying some foundations, perhaps some prolegomena regarding the word of God and how/why we know it is true as well as topics geared towards expanding and exposing our mind on difficult doctrines. The goal is for everyone to think more and more about the great things of God, and whetting our appetite for further individual study, which of course will require, like the Bereans, returning again and again to the source--the Bible!
Group Sixteen (Kevin Schaub) - Holiness
This study will concentrate on God Himself and discuss how His followers can seek to exemplify Christ in their every day walk. "With his trademark candor, J.C. Ryle strips away the gaudy ornamentation that many confuse for holiness, and systematically unfolds the true beauty of what it means to adorn the doctrine of God our Savior. Deep, rich, and penetrating, this timeless classic is quite simply profound." Don't miss this great study and fellowship for all those that live in the Wake Forest area. We would love to have you!
