Missions at FBC
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 (ESV)
We are all called on by Christ Jesus to participate in the great commission to go and make disciples of all nations, that the lost might be reached and God be praised to the very ends of the earth. As a local church, we’re committed to this worldwide task of disciple-making, and desire that each member get involved.
All Christians can participate in the worldwide advance of the gospel by Praying, Giving, and Going. Keep reading below for more information in how to be involved in these areas.
PRAY for Missions.
One of the key ways all Christ-followers can support missions efforts is by prayer. You may ask, “What should I be praying for?” Pray for open doors for the gospel, especially among unreached people groups. Pray that God would stir up hearts in local churches across the globe to go and share the gospel with the lost, especially the 7,038 unreached peoples, and 3,260 unengaged people groups among the nations. Pray for missionaries serving cross-culturally overseas, often at great cost. “Pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest” (Matt 9:38). Ask the Lord if he is calling you to go. The list could go on and on.
As a practical tool for growing in praying for global missions, we would encourage you to sign up to receive regular prayer updates sent in from IMB missionaries serving overseas (www.imb.org/pray/). JoshuaProject.net also offers prayer resources for unreached peoples.
GIVE to Missions.
Another key way to support missions efforts is by giving financially. Serving Christ sacrificially, in part, means utilizing the resources we’ve been given to fund global missions, and funding global missions work is no small thing. Below are a few of the ways members at FBC can contribute to missions efforts.
The Great Commission Fund
To assist in the funding of short-term mission trips, help meet the needs of missionaries we’ve sent overseas, and to support the needs other great commission causes, FBC has established a fund called The Great Commission Fund (GCF). We would encourage every member to prayerfully consider giving regularly to this fund to support ongoing missions work. To contribute, you can make a check payable to FBC Durham with “GCF” in the memo line, or click here to contribute securely online.
Special Offerings and Budgeted Dollars
FBC cooperates with other Southern Baptist Churches by contributing budget dollars to the Cooperative Program which funds ministry and missions both domestically and abroad. The International Mission Board (IMB)’s Lottie Moon Christmas Offering is the most significant missions offering in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), representing a portion of the IMB’s yearly budget to send thousands of missionaries overseas to serve among unreached peoples.
GO on Mission.
While we’re all called to evangelism and outreach, God has called some to leave home to serve in cross-cultural contexts. We invite you to prayerfully ask the question, “Should I leave my home, whether temporarily or permanently, and cross a culture in order to bring the message of the gospel to unreached peoples?” FBC Durham desires to be a sending church. We desire to train up people who love Christ and are primed for serving Christ on mission. It all starts with a heart for the spread of Christ’s glory to the ends of the earth for the joy of the nations.
What are the Options?
There are many ways to go, from short term commitments to lifetime appointments. If you’ve never been on a short-term trip overseas, we would encourage you to start there. Usually the short-term trips we take as a church have come at the request of IMB or missionaries we’ve sent out from FBC and represent strategic partnerships for ongoing global ministry. They are great opportunities to get a taste of what it’s like to serve Christ in a different context, which might fan the flame of your heart for global missions.
We have several short-term trips planned for 2019, and we’re always considering opportunities.
Click here to view, prayerfully consider, and apply for our upcoming short-term trips.
We’ve posted a number of summary reports from past trips dating back to 2012. We’d encourage you to read the stories, and praise God for the mighty works he has done!
