Pray, Give, Go

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”  Matthew 28:18-20 (ESV)

We are all called on by Christ Jesus to participate in the great commission to go and make disciples of all nations, that the lost might be reached and God be praised to the very ends of the earth. As a local church, we’re committed to this worldwide task of disciple-making, and desire that each member get involved. We can all participate by praying and giving, even as some of us are called to go.

Keep reading to learn more about how you can get involved in praying, giving, and going for the glory of God.

PRAY for Missions.

One of the key ways all Christ-followers can support missions efforts is by prayer. You may ask, “What should I be praying for?” Pray for open doors for the gospel, especially among unreached people groups. Pray that God would stir up hearts in local churches across the globe to go and share the gospel with the lost. Pray for missionaries serving cross-culturally overseas, often at great cost. “Pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest” (Matt 9:38). Ask the Lord if he is calling you to go.

Prayer Resources

  • IMB.org/Pray - The IMB maintains a list of prayer points received from missionaries all over the world. We encourage you to pray for these requests and sign up for the IMB's prayer updates.
  • The Joshua Project - Use this tool to pray for unreached people groups during your personal and family devotions.

GIVE Toward Missions.

Another key way to support missions efforts is by giving financially. Serving Christ sacrificially, in part, means utilizing the resources we’ve been given to fund global missions, and funding global missions work is no small thing. Below are a few of the ways members at FBC can contribute to missions efforts.

The Great Commission Fund
To assist in the funding of short-term mission trips, help meet the needs of missionaries we’ve sent overseas, and to support the needs other great commission causes, FBC has established a fund called The Great Commission Fund (GCF). We would encourage every member to prayerfully consider giving regularly to this fund to support ongoing missions work.

Lottie Moon Offering
While FBC cooperates with other Southern Baptist Churches by contributing budget dollars to the Cooperative Program which funds ministry and missions both domestically and abroad, during the winter months FBC also participates in the International Mission Board (IMB)’s Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.

This is the most significant missions offering in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), representing a portion of the IMB’s yearly budget to send thousands of missionaries overseas to serve among unreached peoples. While many will give during the winter months, you can also give all throughout the year.

GO On Mission

Let's start the conversation about how you can be involved in going on mission through FBC Durham.

Missions: Starting Point

Sometimes next steps of obedience to the great commission can be hard to discern. How are we called to obey the missionary task through praying, giving, and going? How does one know if he/she is called to go, and to where?

Below are several topical lessons we've used to help answer these and other questions.
